Teak Place Estate is not just about luxurious living; it’s about harmonizing with nature through modern, sustainable design. We had the opportunity to sit down with Ian Van der Westhuizen, one of the visionary architects behind Teak Place Estate homes, to delve into the unique design principles that make these homes truly exceptional.
Q: What inspired the design concept for an eco-modern community like Teak Place Estate?
A: The Teak Place guidelines take inspiration from its original legacy as a rustic farm against the backdrop of the nearby city. Juxtaposing these opposites allows for fresh and unique design expressions, creating a modern-farm lifestyle.
Q: How do you ensure that Teak Place Estate homes are modern, environmentally sustainable, and in harmony with nature?
A: The guidelines encourage modern architecture responsive to the environment. For instance, we use natural materials like stone and timber alongside modern finishes like steel and glass. The design breaks large forms into smaller, interlinked structures, creating courtyards and private gardens that blend indoor and outdoor living.
Q: Can you elaborate on the off-the-grid capabilities integrated into the design of Teak Place homes?
A: We focus on producing electricity through PV systems and storing excess power in battery banks. Passive design principles, such as optimal solar orientation, double glazing, and large, openable doors, help regulate temperature and connect with the outdoor environment. Deep roof overhangs and shading screens further mitigate the summer sun’s impact.
Q: What considerations are made to minimize the environmental footprint of each home?
A: Breaking up large forms into smaller units allows homes to terrace down slopes, reducing excavation. Excavated soil is repurposed as natural grassy embankments instead of being carted away. This approach minimises environmental disruption.
Q: Could you discuss the use of renewable energy sources in powering the homes?
A: Solar energy is our primary renewable source, complemented by gas for heating. Though not renewable, gas is highly efficient for direct water heating, providing an energy-efficient solution.
Q: How do you envision Teak Place Estate contributing to the future of sustainable living?
A: Teak Place Estate promotes sustainable living through self-sufficient services like on-site water supply and treatment. The organic farm, continuously expanding, showcases the integration of agriculture with lifestyle. We are setting a sustainable living example that others can follow.
Ian’s innovative design principles ensure that Teak Place Estate is not only a beautiful place to live but also a model for eco-friendly, sustainable living. Come and explore how modernity and nature converge at Teak Place Estate.
